A fibershed is a cradle-to-cradle system of creating clothes from regionally grown fibers, natural dyes, and local talent. Unfortunately, most clothing is made internationally and that system creates a lot of waste and pollution. Transition Howard County is creating a Maryland Fibershed to grow an economically diverse, resilient, and local textile supply chain. The Maryland Fibershed will increase interest in using local, sustainable materials among fiber artists, hobbyists, and clothing makers to create local textile products that add value to our communities and the environment. We are creating a free directory to promote organizations who are part of the Maryland Fibershed system. If you are interested in our fibershed project, contact firstname.lastname@example.org or attend an upcoming REconomy meeting. See the calendar for the date of the next REconomy meeting.
The fibershed concept was created by Rebecca Burgess in California and has now spread to other areas. You can learn more about fibersheds across the country at www.fibershed.com.
